The "Peli-Can" of the 319th

Post by lkrs42 » 07 Jun 2025 2343

I may have posted this in the wrong section, but I noticed that the "Peli-Can" was not pictured in the nose art section of this website. I have attached it here. It was piloted by Capt Roy William Olsen, my Great Uncle, of Cedar Falls Iowa. Does anyone have a crew photo? Those that perished on that day were:

Cole, Robert F ~ T/Sgt, CA
Durkin, Thomas H ~ 1st Lt, IL
Enders, Robert K ~ T/Sgt, IN
Hudspeth, Frank A ~ S/Sgt, NC
Muscato, Harold ~ S/Sgt, IA
Olsen, Roy W ~ Capt, Pilot, IA
Setterblade, Russell R ~ 2nd Lt, IL
Simon, William C ~ S/Sgt, WA
Strong, Kenneth F ~ 2nd Lt, CA

The 90th shot down more enemy planes than any other bomb group in the 5th Air Force. The 319th Squadron shot down more enemy planes than any other squadron in the 5th Air force and despite being shot down and lost this crew shot down more than any other bomb crew.

This is awesome. Thank you for sending this. Those enlisted men listed as getting credit, were they the door gunners?
