Message No. 503Message:
A. Beyer: From his class number, your grdfather was probably in the grp.in early 1945. At that time the Air Medal was issued for 100 hors of combat flying. A medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters represented 400 hrs of combat. In late 1944 and 1945 this was a normal number of hours to generate suffient points to be rotated home. The oak leaves were little 3/16th inch bronze leavs to be attached to the ribbon in lieu of additional medals. Prior to the summer of 1944 the DFC had been awarded in many instances for extended combat hours.
