Message: Jon, my uncle 1Lt Ralph E McCord was the pilot of the 319th Bomb Squadron B-24D named "Come And Get It" serial 42-40941 and arrived with his crew to Australia in late June or early July 1943. He was killed in action on October 16, 1943 and was the sole fatality on another plane named "The Sad Sack".
They were on a single plane recon mission about 60 miles east of Madang, and he took a single round of 20mm cannon file through the windscreen. His plane and crew made it back to Dobodura. The plane was salvaged after the war from the Nadzab airfield and a photo of it can be found on the Pacific Wrecks website.
A reprint of the 1944 Asterperious squadron photo book is available on The Book Patch website here for 35 dollars.

Best wishes on your searches about your father's war history.
