Tell us about yourself and your connection or interests to the 90th Bomb Group historical community.

Welcome to the new message board!
Since Launching November 1st, 2019, I am one of the new site administrators helping continue the vision and tradition of its original creator/founder, Gary Gray. My personal relationship to the 90th goes years back upon researching my father in law, Dale Holland's Crew (319th). That work led me to the original site, meeting up with all the great people like Gary, Bob Tupa and so many others who helped me put the historical pieces together of Dale's wartime accounts.

We are responsible for preserving the historical information contained in the original website and will now take on efforts going forward to remake a modern enhanced user experience for our group of long time members and new followers. Our efforts are solely to preserve historic accounts and information for the benefit of the Vets who served and their families or other WW2 historians.

For everyone who has followed this site from it's early days, to anyone new who is interested in contributing, thank you for all your support and patience while we work behind the scenes. We're dedicated to continue the long running tradition serving the 90thBombGroup.org community and are very proud to be a small part of all it stands for.

If anyone has questions or is having difficulty registering for this message board, please reach out to any of us, we'll be happy to help you.

Dave

A hearty "thank you" for bringing this site back to life. My uncle and my namesake, Walter Van McCarty, was a member of the 400th Bomber Squadron. He was a passenger on 44-41482 which was lost on June 6, 1945. As fate would have it, I was in Marine Aviation (F-4B's) during the Vietnam War. My squadron also participated in the Philippines campaign of WWII with their F4U's. There is a connection of sorts when I study the fighters' history, I get an idea of what the bombers' side was up to.

I am Susan EWING Wolfe daughter of what was then Lt. John D. Ewing, of the 320th, 90th Bomb Group. I am new to this web page and am working my way around it. However I am NOT new to the "Jolly Rogers" 90th Bomb Group Association. My husband Buddy and I have been long time members of it, and my mother-Martha Ewing was also a member. She passed away in 2002. Unfortunately my Dad John D. Ewing died in 1969 at the age of 53 from a massive heart attack. We have attended a reunion a long time ago, 1988? or so in San Antonio, Texas with our son who was in the Army at the time. We thoroughly enjoyed it and are so disappointed that this year's reunion has been canceled. However we certainly understand in light of the COVID crisis. We are both eagerly anticipating going through the web site and discovering some new things.
I have posted a notice on The Message Board for inquires or searches. If anyone has any diaries, letters of any relevant information about my father I would sure like to hear it. I guess after all of these years, and many searches, it is not very likely to happen but one never knows!! Wishing everyone good health and safe journies through life.

Susan EWING Wolfe

My name is Jack Frame. I’ve recently completed a family history book on my Dad’s WWII service. My father,
Mark B. Frame was a co-pilot on a PBY. He was part of the 6th Emergency Rescue Squadron stationed in the Phillipines, Okinawa and IE Shima during 1945.
One of their main missions was to rescue crews after any type of mishap with an aircraft. I’ve recently learned that on July 16th 1945 my father’s crew rescued members of the 90th Bomb Group. The crew involved was flying a B24J bomber, nicknamed “Live Wire” on a mission to Canton, China. During their return to the Phillipines they ran out of gas. Most of the crew parachuted but I know the captain, 2nd Lt. Samuel Bowers stayed with the plane and was lost at sea. Sadly, 4 others perished as well, but 5 men did survive and managed to get into rafts that were dropped for them.

The survivors were at sea for 25 hours before they were located and rescued by my Dad’s crew. The men were dehydrated and injured, surrounded by sharks. I know the names of the “Live Wire” crew that survived because they were recently discovered in the PBY navigator’s diary!

I would love to share with any family members of the “Live Wire” full written accounts I have of the rescue operations from that day. I also have photos from this rescue which includes the PBY, men in rafts, men in the water plus sharks surrounding the area. I would also like to have any photos of the “Live Wire” crew or their aircraft.
Many Thanks!

Welcome Jack,

Thank you for your post and we're glad you're here. There are photos of Live Wire in our nose art gallery, there may be more you can look around. Also if you search in the original archived 90th forum, there is information on Live Wire as well.

Hope this helps!
