319th location in the Philippines

Post by Frank Green » 27 Feb 2023 1008

I'm researching my father Aaron Green's service as a Bombardier in the 319th from July 1944 through January 1946. He was stationed in New Guinea and then the Philippines. Dad was an architect, an associate of Frank Lloyd Wright, and between missions delighted the crews by designing and building housing and an Officers' Club. Mom kept all his letters home but with censorship he couldn't reveal his specific locations.

Can anyone tell me where in the Philippines the 319th was stationed? I would like to go there.

Thanks very much.

Bob, thanks so much for your suggestion about McGuire Field. Indeed, I see Dad's unit on the attached list of units based there. In his letters home, he describes going into the jungle to meet local natives to acquire ethnic souvenirs. He also tells about skirmishes with a few Japanese soldiers who remained outside the base. I don't know if these stories are consistent with the huge airbase which was McGuire.

Thanks again for illuminating a part of Dad's life we've been hard-pressed to understand.

Frank
