Message:
On the 22nd of October 2006 I located the remanants of a B24 Liberator that crashed on the "Gordon" airstrip located at Iron Range, via Lockhart River Far North Queensland Australia.
The accident occurred on the 26th December 1942, when the aircraft was taking off for a bombing mission to PNG. The liberator upon taking off, hit trees, and veered, causing it to crash, tragically killing all ten members of the crew. Witnesses stated that ground crew ran for their lives at the location, as the explosion shook the ground, and the light was believed to light up the night sky.
A Memorial for the crew is now established within the grounds of the Iron Range (Lockhart River) airfield to remember this tragic incident.
If you are a member of the 90th or any other unit that was based at Iron Range please make contact, as I am collecting the memories of Iron Range during WW2.
